Released a year after the launch of the Xbox 360, Gears Of War was one of the first games that really showed the next generation of game consoles was here. Created by Cliff Bleszinski and Epic Games, Gears Of War as a runaway success and it has become one of the staples of the Xbox world.
Gears Of War is a sci-fi, military shooter where you play the role of Marcus Fenix a hulking badass of a man who was part of the COG. He was in jail for failing to follow orders, but he was released when all hell broke loose as the Locust who were living underground, broke out of their underground habitat and waged war on humanity. For a story that on paper sounds kind of straightforward. Gears Of War has one of the best lore’s of any action game and the voice acting was fantastic, really bringing Marcus, Dom, Baird and the rest of the characters to life.
Gameplay wise, Gears Of War is best described as a cover based shooter. You can run and gun, but most of the time you will be hiding behind objects looking for the right moment to move in closer for an attack, some of the attacks were really gruesome and super cool! Gameplay wise, Gears Of War was very tight and was an incredibly fun experience, with many people loving the single player campaign. Gears Of War also offered multiplayer action, but this was just as Xbox Live was really starting to take off.
The original Gears Of War was a huge deal at the time, selling millions of copies and becoming one of the first must own games for the Xbox 360. It also set the stage for what would become one of the biggest exclusives Xbox would have.
