As it is Halloween season I thought that this week I would have a little bit of fun looking at some of the scariest first person games I have ever played. Starting things off is going to be Doom 3!
Back when Doom 3 was released I never had a PC, but I did have an original Xbox so getting a game like this was awesome for me. Doom was one of those games that as a kid I only experienced at a friend’s house as once again, I did not have a PC. I did have the SNES version, but let’s face it that was not exactly the best.
Doom 3 was heavily hyped and at the time it was released on PC I worked in a video game store. I remember it being one of the first games that we were strictly told that we were not to accept trade ins as it had a onetime code you had to use in order to play online.
When Doom 3 was released on the original Xbox it was a day one buy for me. I loved the story of Doom and how you were a marine on this research station where all hell had broken loose. Doom 3 is a very cramped game in places and while going back this is not that great. At the time it made things even more tense and scary.
While the reboot of Doom that came out a couple of years back was all about action, blood, and gore. I think that Doom 3 while a very violent game was more about actually scaring the player as well. It was very creepy, dark and it was jam packed with jump scares. I had a blast with Doom 3 on the Xbox and while PC gamers at the time would look down at it. I thought it looked and played great.
It was re-released as Doom 3 the BFG Edition on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 many years later, but I still have a soft spot for the original Xbox version. By today’s standards, it is a rather slow paced game, especially when compared to the Doom that Bethesda made, but I do not care, I love it!
